As you lay your head down at night after a day of activity, do you ever experience an increase in mental chatter or restlessness? Suddenly your thoughts want to drift to everything you need to get done tomorrow or you replay all the past conversations from the day, going over what you could have said or done differently. Perhaps you experience more movement in your body than your mind, tossing and turning despite feeling tired and ready for sleep. If so, you may be experiencing bedtime overthinking. What causes overthinking to increase at bedtime and what are some strategies and tools that can help your mind and body relax so you can fall asleep?
Why Does Overthinking Get Louder at Night?
There are a variety of factors that can cause excess thinking at bedtime.
Fewer Distractions at Night
During the day, you are focused on activities, events, conversations, etc which prevent the mind from wandering as much as when you slow down. When you finally get to settle down in the evening, the mind has fewer things to distract it and the body has less movement to keep it busy.
Time to Process Stressful Events
When all activity for the day is complete, your mind recognizes that it has time and feels safe enough to process stressful events and unresolved emotions.
Future Worries
If you have a lot going on or a big event the next day, you may find your mind trying to plan or anticipate the future. The mind likes to plan for all possibilities and will try to think of everything you need to do or scenarios to prepare for.
Underlying Anxiety Disorders
For some individuals, excess thinking at night can be a symptom of anxiety. In such cases, working with a therapist may be beneficial to discuss coping strategies and explore the underlying causes of anxiety.
