Tamar Barnett

LCPC

If you find yourself experiencing anxiety, worrying throughout the day or night, or if your relationship with a loved one is suffering, Tamar will work to understand your needs and support your growth. Tamar is dedicated to helping her clients build healthier relationships with themselves and to deepen connection with their loved ones. She has extensive experience providing both individual and couples therapy.

Balancing self-acceptance work with a practical skills building process, Tamar empowers her clients to create the changes that they want in their lives and in their relationships. Prioritizing a nurturing and warm environment in session, she works collaboratively with clients to help them access their strengths, and to grow more self-aware and self-compassionate. Increasing self-awareness without judgement can allow individuals to sit with uncomfortable feelings, quiet rumination and self-doubt, and to shift automatic responses and patterns in relationships. Throughout her years of experience, Tamar’s clients have often described her as warm, compassionate, and insightful. Her style is relational, and she is committed to building strong and secure relationships with her clients first and foremost.

Tamar uses an attachment-informed approach, trauma informed care, and mindfulness to support her clients’ unique needs. Her approach fosters strengthening secure connection with self and loved ones and also incorporates awareness of the mind-body connection, enhanced through research based practices. Her training has included Emotionally Focused Therapy, mindfulness based interventions, and advanced training in trauma informed care. Tamar obtained her Master’s degree in Counseling from Johns Hopkins University in 2007.

Her special interests include: anxiety, marital and relationship issues, chronic illness and pain, depression, panic, parenting and family connections, self esteem, ADHD, women’s reproductive mental health, therapy for athletes and grief. Tamar greatly values inclusivity in the therapeutic process and she is a culturally responsive therapist, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and a neurodiversity-affirming therapist.
